Description
67 Jean DEWASNE (1921–1999) Studio pôle, c. 1975 Lacquer mounted on panel, signed on the reverse 50 x 64.5 cm Bibliography: comparable to the composition on the same subject (Cambrai Museum collection), reproduced on p. 123 of ‘Jean Dewasne’ by P. Deparpe. An early exponent of abstraction, Jean Dewasne was one of the leading advocates of a visual language based on formal rigour and the power of colour, which he helped to popularise in the post-war period. Executed in lacquer on panel, the work bears witness to the culmination of his explorations of smooth surfaces and chromatic saturation, where vivid blocks of colour and sharp contours organise a dynamic space of interlacing geometric forms. Through the masterful interplay of contrasts between warm and cool colours and a visual rhythm reminiscent of a musical score, the composition conveys a structured tension that evokes both architecture and the musicality inherent in his artistic approach.
