Description
CHATEAUBRIAND, François-René de. Mémoire d'outre-tombe. Paris, Eugène et Victor Penaud frères, 1849-1850. 12 volumes in-8. Bound in half red morocco, spine ribbed and decorated, gilt head, printed covers preserved (binding by Pagnant). A very important first edition of the greatest rarity, one of the masterpieces of the 19th century in which literature blends with history. The edition of these memoirs was published shortly after Chateaubriand's death on 4 July 1848, and it is known that during his lifetime Chateaubriand had ceded the rights of exploitation to a company of subscribing shareholders formed in 1836 by the publisher H.-L. Delloye. The copy is complete with all its covers, which bear the label of the bookseller Dion-Lambert, who succeeded the Penaud brothers; the list of subscribers, the letter to M. Delloye and the warning appear at the head of the first volume, although Carteret points out that this first section (XVI pp.) is often missing from copies bearing the Dion-Lambert label. Volumes I to VIII are dated 1849, volumes IX to XII 1850. A fine copy, very well bound, with a few scattered but not serious brown spots. Carteret I-163. Vicaire II-290. En Français dans le Texte 268. Escoffier 1833. Expert: François GIARD Expert près la Cour d'Appel de Douai, 59700 Marcq en Baroeul. Tel 0681456411
