Roman School, c. 1600,
"Christ at the Column": Christ is bound to a short, curved column, similar to the one preserved in the Basilica of Saint Praxedes in Rome, which tradition holds to be a fragment of the Column of the Flagellation.
This column was brought back from Jerusalem in 1233 by Cardinal Jean Colonna, Apostolic Legate to Syria during the Fifth Crusade.
