DU BELLAY, Guillaume and DU BELLAY, Martin. The Memoirs of Messrs Martin du Bellay, Lord of Langey. Containing an account of various events that took place in the Kingdom of France from the year 1513 until the death of King Francis I, into which the author has inserted three books and several fragments from the *Ogdoades* by Messrs Guillaume du Bellay, Lord of Langey, his brother. A work newly brought to light and presented by Messrs René Du Bellay... Paris, A l’Olivier de P. l’Huillier, 1570. Very small 8vo. [12] ff., 182 ff., [10] ff., 289 ff., [14] ff. 18th-century full calf binding, plain spine richly decorated with fillets and small metal fittings, red title label. Brunet I-747, Cioranescu 260: An edition following the original folio edition of 1569. It was not until 1753 that a new edition appeared, followed by editions in 1821 (Petitot) and 1836 (Buchon). Guillaume Du Bellay (1491–1543), diplomat, soldier and historian. He was favoured by Francis I, for whom he served as one of the key figures shaping French policy against Charles V. He died in the presence of his physician, François Rabelais, who eloquently lamented his death and recounted the portentous events that foreshadowed it. Guillaume Du Bellay shares with his brother Jean the honour of having protected Rabelais, who dedicated a book of the *Stratagèmes* to his praise; both the original Latin text and the French translation by Claude Massiran have been lost.
