Description
BINDING WITH COAT OF ARMS – CHOISEUL – LA CONDAMINE, Charles Marie de. Letter to Dr Maty on the current state of inoculation in France. Paris, Prault, Pissot, 1764. In-12. Contemporary full red morocco binding, smooth spine richly decorated, wide gilded Greek fret framing the covers, gilt edges, gilt fillet on the edges. Binding bearing the coat of arms of Etienne-François de Choiseul-Stainville, Duke of Choiseul. (O.H.R. 834).
Ex libris: Bibliothèque Madame de La Borde.
First edition. A highly significant text by La Condamine on smallpox inoculation in France.
A prestigious copy bearing the coat of arms of the Duke of Choiseul (1719–1785), a statesman and head of government under Louis XV.
Jean-Joseph de La Borde (1724–1794), a prominent financier and court banker, was a close friend of the Duke of Choiseul. It is known that several volumes bound with the Duke of Choiseul’s coat of arms bear the bookplate of ‘Madame de La Borde’.
A prestigious copy with a prestigious provenance.
(It is possible that the Greek fret border is a later addition dating from the end of the Ancien Régime. Two scuffed corners, a small tear on the spine). - Expert: François GIARD
