ROUSSEAU, Jean-Jacques. *Emile, or On Education*. The Hague, Jean Néaulme, 1762. 4 volumes in-12. Full calfskin binding, smooth spine with decoration, red title label, triple gilt fillet framing the covers with fleurons in the spandrels, gilt edges.
A major work of the 18th century.
The first edition was published in 1762 by the Parisian bookseller Duchesne under the imprint of his Dutch colleague Jean Néaulme; it was printed in two formats: one in-12, with the Amsterdam imprint, considered the first printing and the true first edition; the other a reprint in-8, with the The Hague imprint. This copy, bearing the address of The Hague at Jean Néaulme’s and in in-12 format, is a second edition published by Duchesne in 1762. See Dufour 190.
It is also illustrated with five separate plates by Charles Eisen, engraved by de Longueil, Pasquier and Le Grand in the first print run.
