Description
Eliane BIRABENT (1897–1980), signed under her married name LEGROIS. Set of two oil paintings on canvas: - Gargoyle. Signed lower left. 56 x 40 cm - Church interior. Signed top left (signature erased). 28 x 23 cm Provenance: the artist’s descendants Eliane Birabent (1897–1980), née Legrois, was born in Algeria and travelled and lived with her husband all over the world, notably in Antwerp. She was a pupil of Octave Guillonnet at the JULIAN studio on Rue de Berry in Paris. She was strongly influenced by Gustave Moreau in her early career. An Orientalist painter, she developed her style towards a colourful lyricism inspired by the light of North Africa and Spain. Mountain landscapes, particularly those of Savoy, also feature prominently in her work.
