Description
French School, a pupil of William BOUGUEREAU (1825–1905). The Shepherd’s Departure. Watercolour over black chalk lines on paper mounted on board. Inscribed in pen in the lower right-hand corner: “… Master Bouguereau, July 1865”. 63 x 50 cm This scene is reminiscent of Bouguereau’s *The Shepherd’s Departure* (or *The Shepherd’s Return*, depending on the title variant), now held in a private collection. It skilfully combines the artist’s characteristic idealisation, a keen eye for detail and a genuine sensitivity in the expression of emotions. This large-format watercolour, executed to a very high standard, is probably the work of one of Bouguereau’s pupils, as suggested by a handwritten inscription visible in the bottom right-hand corner. The elegant silhouettes and soft light highlight the idealised faces and reinforce the peaceful atmosphere of the scene. The work as a whole celebrates the poetry of rural life whilst expressing the emotional dimension of everyday separations, a favourite theme of Bouguereau’s that his studio helped to perpetuate.
