Description
CARLO NAYA (1816–1882) Photographer, Venice. View of Venice from a gondola. Mounted photograph (albumen print?). Dry stamp. 42 x 55 cm. Stains. Framed.
He settled in Venice in 1857 and joined forces with Carlo Ponti to set up his photographic studio, quickly establishing himself at an iconic location on the island where he would gain prominence: St Mark’s Square. His fame is due to his exceptional technical mastery and his rendering of light, which enhances the architectural views and everyday life on the island. He was one of the most famous Italian architectural photographers of his time and was awarded a medal at the Great Exhibition in London in 1862.
