JEANNERET Pierre (1896–1967) – AHUJA & Co, Publisher (NEW DELHI Teak armchair with a rectangular seat in woven cane, suspended by chains from the armrests. Slightly sloping backrest in cotton cord. Side frame consisting of flat, profiled feet connected by two tubular crossbars. Metal maker’s plate beneath the seat. Circa 1960 (Damage, wear, paint stains and missing sections). H: 76.5 cm x W: 49 cm x D: 64 cm Chandigarh is a new city built after India’s independence in 1947. Renowned for its urban planning, the masterplan was drawn up by Le Corbusier based on an earlier plan by Albert Mayer. The city is divided into sectors, numbered from 1 to 60 (Le Corbusier had the number 13 omitted), forming a rectangle measuring 800 × 1,200 metres. Most of the city’s buildings were designed by Pierre Jeanneret, as was a whole range of furniture, of which our armchair is a rather rare example. Provenance: Studio armchair belonging to the painter Jean-Claude Salomon (1928–2022), acquired around 1982.
