Description
Henri GROISNE (1871–1915): a collection comprising a photographic album and a selection of silver-gelatin prints mounted on red-bordered card, including views of Madagascar, Niger and French West Africa, scenes of shipping, landscapes, villages, portraits, group shots, animals, buildings and ethnographic documents (various sizes – wear, foxing, soiling, creases, small losses, album and prints not collated, as is) Henri GROISNE, born in Saint-Germain-Lembron in 1871 and died in 1915, a career soldier who enlisted as a volunteer in 1891, stayed in French Sudan from 1896 to 1899, took part in expeditions to Kati, Kayes, Timbuktu, Kabara and Koulikoro, then on the Chari expedition in 1901–1902 and on the expedition led by Captain Eugène Lenfant from 1902 onwards to study the navigability of the Niger. The accompanying documentation identifies him as the photographer for this mission, whose photographs were taken on stereoscopic glass plates and printed in France by his family. The collection also relates to his stay in Madagascar in 1904–1906 and to the Upper Senegal and Niger mission of 1907–1910.
