Description
A set of three Roman tokens, known as spintriae (or spintrian tokens), which were used to pay for admission or specific services in brothels. During the reigns of certain emperors (such as Tiberius), it was strictly forbidden to bring official coins bearing the emperor’s effigy into places of debauchery, on pain of the crime of lèse-majesté. These tokens therefore allowed this ban to be circumvented. They were certainly minted at a later date.
