Description
Anonymous photo album, 47th Bomb Group – 12th Air Force – North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Corsica (109 original photographs) A modern album containing original prints (mainly 4x5in./10x12.5cm, with a few smaller-format photographs) of the 47th Bomb Group, equipped with A-20 Boston and Havoc light twin-engine bombers, serving within the 12th Air Force. The first two photographs on the front page were taken on 15 August 1944 during the landings in Provence. They show an aircraft shot down and ablaze over Italy, an A-20 flying over Vesuvius, aircraft in flight alongside similar types belonging to the Royal Air Force, numerous photographs taken in flight during combat missions, pilots during briefings, General Eisenhower visiting the front, medal-awarding ceremonies, the eruption of Vesuvius in March 1944, and a few photographs showing the unit receiving its first A-26 Invaders, with which it carried out its final combat missions, notably around the Brenner Pass in April 1945. The 47th Bomb Group was based in Morocco from 1942, then in Algeria and Tunisia, before moving to Sicily, then Italy, Corsica and France – with a brief stop at Salon-de-Provence – before returning to Italy until the end of the war.
