Photograph album of Lt Clifford L. Summers, 94th Bomb Group – 8th Air Force – England (35 original photographs) This officer was posted to the 94th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force in England. According to research carried out with the veterans’ association, Summers was posted to the 410th Bomb Squadron and was transferred to the 94th Bomb Group Headquarters in December 1943. His role is not specified, but he was likely responsible for administrative duties. Although he was not a flight crew member, his album contains excellent photographs taken during the early days of the unit’s first combat missions, as it mainly features camouflaged B-17Fs before this type of aircraft was replaced by the aluminium-coloured B-17G model. The album begins with a reference to Bury St Edmunds, which was the base of the 94th BG. This first page bears the inscription ‘1943–1944’ around an original 8th Air Force insignia, locally manufactured in England and woven onto felt (a version far less common than the standard American-made version). The original prints are mainly in the 4x5in./10x12.5cm format. Lt Summers appears at the start of the album wearing a B-3-style lined jacket, and at the end in a B-9 parka alongside a pilot. Throughout the album, the photographs show B-17Fs in flight during combat missions. Some are identified by their unit call signs. The dates at the top of some photographs have been deliberately cut out for censorship reasons. Of particular note is an interesting photograph taken through the viewfinder of a B-17’s rear turret, several photographs taken during the famous raid on the Marienburg aircraft factory – which was notable for the precision of the bombing of the target – as well as the raid on Abbeville, home to the formidable German fighter wing JG 26. Several photographs were taken during a raid on Berlin with no date indicated, but it is likely that they were taken on 6 March 1944 during the 8th Air Force’s very first raid on the capital of the Reich. One exceptional photograph shows a downed B-17 nosediving straight towards the ground. One of the few photographs dated 11 March 1944 is a portrait of Lt. Goldman taken at the foot of his aircraft as he had just completed his 25th combat mission, marking the end of his tour of duty and earning him a return ticket to the United States.
