Photograph album of Lieutenant Julian “Jules” M. Blomberg, 98th Bomb Group – 15th Air Force – Italy (over 150 original photographs) This B-24 Liberator pilot serving with the 98th Bomb Group (nicknamed the Pyramiders) flew nearly 46 missions during his tour of duty, which began in July 1944 from Italy, during which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross during a raid on the famous Ploesti oil refineries in Romania, as well as the Air Medal and the Purple Heart. This album is accompanied by his decorations (in miniature) and his ribbon bar for dress uniform. A large-format certificate featuring his portrait summarises Blomberg’s career. This officer had a particularly eventful career, as after the end of the conflict in Europe he took part in the Berlin Airlift in 1948, then in the Korean War, where he served another tour of duty on the B-29 Superfortress, before being posted to U-Tapao Air Base in Thailand during the Vietnam War, serving with a unit of B-52s and KC-135 in-flight refuelling aircraft, where he retired with the rank of Colonel, having completed a further hundred or so missions. His album contains family photographs taken in the United States, as well as photos from training bases, postcards, in-flight photographs from the cockpit of a B-24 Liberator, photographs taken during combat missions showing impact craters on the ground (bearing markings of another unit, the 451st BG, with which the 98th BG had to operate), Flak barrages over Capri and around the bases at Manduria and Lecce in southern Italy, in the Puglia region. It also features a small vintage leaflet dedicated to the little lucky bell of San Michele, a souvenir that many American airmen were particularly fond of whilst on leave in Capri, wearing it on the lapel of their flight jacket or on a breast pocket of their dress jacket. Five large-format photographs dated 1968 and a pin-up sketch drawn on computer paper by Blomberg’s men summarise his tour of duty during the Vietnam War.
