Description
Photograph album belonging to Staff Sergeant W. Romanchuk, 301st Bomb Group – 15th Air Force – Italy (100 original photographs)
This non-commissioned officer is identified by his name appearing on an envelope containing a letter dated 14 September 1944 addressed to his parents, bearing marks indicating it had been examined by a censorship officer. This envelope contained a bundle of vintage postcards of Rome and Capri.
This folder contains photographs of the 301st BG command staff, photographs of B-17s in flight bearing the unit’s combat markings, an impressive large-format photograph of a B-17 shot down and ablaze over Italy, a B-17 flying through a barrage of flak, bombs being dropped over a large Italian warship at anchor (protected by anti-torpedo nets), an Italian warship exploding at sea, B-17s that had made emergency landings, P-38 escort fighters, General Spaatz, commander of the 15th Air Force, on a visit, wreckage of German aircraft (Ju-52 and Me-323 Gigant) and Italian aircraft (Macchi C-200), a photograph of world boxing champion Joe Louis on tour in Italy with the Allied forces, formations of B-17s in flight en route to the target, photographs of the eruption of Vesuvius in March 1944, and finally a collection of large-format square prints taken during the bombing raids over the target: these show bombs hurtling towards the target, air bases, explosions from Flak barrage shells, and bombs striking ships at sea.
