Description
Photograph album of Sergeant Lee Malus, 467th Bomb Group – 8th Air Force – England (88 original photographs)
Sergeant Malus was posted to the 790th Bomb Squadron of the 467th Bomb Group, flying B-24 Liberators as a gunner.
Although his name is listed on the first page of his album, none of the photographs show his face and he could not be identified.
The photographs have been mounted with transparent corners.
The album is accompanied by a photographic leaflet published by the American Red Cross in England and addressed to his wife in New Orleans, as well as letterheads, the content of which has unfortunately been cut out.
The first photographs show B-24s from the unit in flight in June 1944, and the P-47 piloted by Colonel Shower (commander of the 467th Bomb Group), who used this fighter to regroup his aircraft in flight. Most of the photographs are in the standard 4x5in. (10x12.5cm) format and are sometimes smaller, particularly those taken whilst on leave in London, or in flight during the bombing of a bridge. The in-flight photographs alternate with those taken on the ground. They are sometimes captioned and depict the daily lives of the airmen of the 467th BG and the direct hits on various aircraft. The shattered armoured windscreen of the tail turret, with Sergeant Gillette inside, is a fine example of the effectiveness of the protective armour fitted to American aircraft. A series of captioned photographs show aerial views of various German towns destroyed by the bombing raids: Bremen, Hamburg, Mülheim, Essen, Münster, and the famous Remagen Bridge.
One B-24 was particularly famous within the 467th BG: the ‘Witchcraft’ (a play on words referring to its pilot, Lieutenant Witch). This aircraft set a record within the 8th Air Force with 131 missions to its credit, thanks to the efficiency of its team of mechanics.
The album concludes with photographs taken in flight during missions, most of which are dated and geolocated.
Postcards featuring pin-ups, as well as a booklet bearing the emblem of the 2nd Air Force in Sioux Falls – given to demobilised crews in the United States – accompany the album, along with a copy of the 467th BG Journal dated 21 April 1945 and the Christmas menu from 1944.
