Anonymous photo album, 41st Air Depot Group, 15th Air Force, Italy (42 original photographs) This album begins with two portraits of American officers, one of whom must be the album’s former owner, having been posted to the 41st Air Depot Group (an aircraft maintenance and repair depot) within the 15th Air Force, stationed at Gioia del Colle, in the Bari and Puglia region of southern Italy. An initial series of four photographs shows a group of women from the USO (United States Organizations), responsible for providing recreational and morale-boosting services to American forces, gathered at the foot of a B-24 covered in graffiti and a B-17 nicknamed ‘Jack Haley’s Comet’ Several photos then show B-24 Liberators and B-17 Flying Fortresses from various Bomb Groups undergoing repairs (449th, 450th, 451st and 485th BG), as well as unmarked aircraft that appear to be awaiting assignment to combat units. A series of six photographs taken at the scene of a B-24 crash bearing the marking (41st) made it possible to identify the unit and the location. Two photographs show mechanics working on a B-24 and a B-17, as well as earth-moving machinery.
