Description
Anonymous photo album, VB-75 – US Navy – Pacific (124 original photographs)
This album, whose owner is not identified by name (although the caption of one photograph does name him), contains photographs of the US Navy’s VB-75 dive-bomber squadron, equipped with SB2C-4 Helldivers, immediately afterthe war, first based on land and then aboard the aircraft carrier USS Franklin Roosevelt (during its first deployment in January–March 1946).
The tactical markings on the Helldivers’ vertical stabilisers can be misleading, as can the note ‘Retiring after bomb attack’ on the back of one photograph – given that the war had ended – but the unit has been clearly identified. This note likely refers to a training manoeuvre. The photographs taken on board the aircraft carrier, mainly around the flight deck, show the Helldivers in action, as well as the pilots in a gallery of 20 portraits taken from inside their cockpits.
There are also several photographs of F4U-4 Corsairs from the VF-75 fighter squadron, which was embarked alongside the Helldivers.
Photographs taken on board aircraft carriers remain rare due to the unique nature of this type of vessel, which forms the spearhead of the US forces. Censorship generally prohibits photography on board for obvious security reasons
