Description
Photograph album of Lt. Richard G. Vaughn, VS-53 – US Navy – Pacific (46 original photographs) This album belonged to Lt. Richard Vaughn, who was posted to Squadron VS-53 flying the SBD Dauntless. This unit provided air cover for Pearl Harbour throughout 1944 by conducting anti-submarine patrols around the Hawaiian Islands. Vaughn was identified thanks to handwritten annotations on the backs of the photographs and the large number of pictures in which he appears. In addition to the photographs taken in Hawaii showing the pilots in dress uniform, the uniqueness of this album lies in the various portraits of the squadron’s pilots in flight uniform. Two photographs of the Dauntless show that they were carrying depth charges under their wings. This album is an excellent source of information for enthusiasts of American aviation equipment and uniformology. (Grégory Pons Collection)
