Handwritten notebooks of Lieutenant Edward J. Cadger, 99th Bomb Group – 12th Air Force – North Africa/Italy A set of six handwritten notebooks by Lt. Cadger, who was posted as a bombardier operator with the 348th Bomb Squadron on a B-17F within the 99th Bomb Group of the 12th Air Force in North Africa. This is a particularly rare collection, as Cadger joined this squadron in the spring of 1943 whilst it was still undergoing training in the USA. He documents not only this training period but also the first missions of B-17 heavy bombers from Africa (in conjunction with units of the 8th Air Force operating from England) before these units were transferred in late 1943 to the 15th Air Force in Italy. Cadger was therefore one of the pioneers of combat missions flown by B-17s from North Africa over Italy, notably the Foggia region in preparation for the landings in Sicily and subsequently in Italy. He flew a number of missions over the south of France around Marseille. His 50th mission, which took place on 9 October 1943, targeted the Larissa airfield in Greece. Cadger was assigned to Captain Max E. Davis’s No. 19 crew and recounts their entire journey, beginning with their transfer to the combat zone aboard their aircraft and their first operations in July 1943, during which, as the navigator’s right-hand man, he recorded all the mission parameters. During one of his first missions, his aircraft ran out of fuel and was forced to make an emergency landing in a remote area, where Cadger found himself having to use his Colt .45 against locals who were attempting to attack the crew. Cadger ended his career with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the US Air Force. A pair of enamelled insignia from the 12th Air Force accompanies these logbooks. A collection of rare, first-hand and particularly interesting documents covering a period and missions about which little is known. (Grégory Pons Collection)
