Description
Anonymous photo album, 7th Photo-Reco Group – 8th Air Force – England (67 original photographs) This album contains a collection of photographic prints (20x25cm) taken from the pages of the 7th Photo Group’s historical commemorative book, originally published for members of the unit, with each page printed on photographic paper. It is accompanied by Patricia Fussell Keen’s excellent historical work *The Eyes of the 8th*, in English, published in 1996. This book is a ‘must-have’ for anyone seeking documentation on this little-known unit. The 7th Photo Group was equipped with Spitfires and F-5 Lightnings. It includes numerous aerial photographs as well as compositions combining photographs and drawings describing the role of the aerial reconnaissance unit and its specific role in gathering intelligence as close as possible to the targets. The photographs thus show V-1 flying bomb launch sites, Flak batteries, aerial views of the city of Nuremberg, and various industrial and military sites. Two photographs are of particular interest as they show the wrecks of several Dornier 335s (one of the very last revolutionary fighters developed as ‘last-ditch’ weapons) and the wreckage of a Messerschmitt 262 jet fighter. Two photographs taken on 6 June 1944 show landing craft on a beach, and larger ships at sea. An oblique view shows Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest in Berchtesgaden, whilst other photographs depict the destruction in German towns, as well as damage to railway and road bridges. A newspaper dated 13 February 1943 is included. Patricia Keen’s historical work concludes with a list of all the aerial reconnaissance missions carried out by the unit.
