Description
Historical book from the period: ‘447th Bomb Group’ – 8th Air Force This book, dedicated to the 447th Bomb Group, which was equipped with B-17 Flying Fortresses, was compiled by Captain Estley K. Surridge and Captain Edward C. Dooley. This is a copy of the original 1946 edition. This book is a photographic history of the 447th BG and comprises over 200 pages; it was printed in the United States in 1946 by the renowned publishing house Newsfoto Publishing Co., based in San Angelo, Texas, which specialised in publishing this type of book for veterans and their families. The cover is adorned with the insignia of the 447th Bomb Group. This collection was conceived as an unofficial history detailing the group’s activities from its activation until its return to the United States. It includes a detailed chronology of the 447th BG’s 258 combat missions, hundreds of photographic reproductions of the crews, and a comprehensive roster listing several hundred names and addresses of the unit’s personnel at the end of the war. The publication of this book was made possible thanks to financial support from the unit’s Officers’ Club, with a view to distributing it to members listed on the rolls at the time the 447th BG left Europe. The work of compiling this volume was carried out under challenging conditions at Drew Field in Florida by a very small team whilst the group was in the midst of being deactivated. The two authors included all the photographs available at the time: aircrews, ground crews, portraits of senior officers in command of the 447th BG and its four bomber squadrons (708th, 709th, 710th and 711th BS), and photographs of everyday life. A rare volume in its first edition. 275 pages. In English. (Grégory Pons Collection)
