Description
Historical book of the period: ‘467th Bomb Group’ – 8th Air Force This book, written by Allan Healy and devoted to the 467th Bomb Group, which was equipped with B-24 Liberators, was self-published in the United States in 1947. This is a copy of the first edition, serving as the official history and souvenir album of this heavy bomber unit of the 8th Air Force, nicknamed the ‘Rackheath Aggies’, equipped with B-24 Liberators and based at Rackheath in England. This book is not merely a collection of dry statistics or daily mission reports. Its text seeks above all to portray the bomber group as ‘an entity and a personality in its own right’, highlighting the esprit de corps of the aircrews and ground crews under the command of Colonel Albert J. Shower. This book serves as a ‘Memory Book’ for the veterans. It includes a chronological account of the unit’s activities, its training, its deployment to Europe, as well as a complete roster (a list of personnel by name) and a register of casualties sustained on mission. Allan Healy’s commemorative work documents an elite unit, as the 467th Bomb Group holds the all-time record for bombing accuracy within the entire 8th Air Force, a feat notably achieved on 15 April 1945 during the attack on a German battery at Pointe de Grave, in France (with 100 per cent of bombs hitting the target). It was also within this group that the famous B-24 known as ‘Witchcraft’ flew, which holds the record for the number of consecutive combat missions without any technical incidents. Stained cover A rare book in its first edition. 155 pages. In English. (Grégory Pons Collection)
