Description
Historical book ‘U.S. Marine Corps Aviation since 1912’ – USMC This reference work was written by Peter Mersky (an F-8 Crusader pilot and retired US Navy officer). Mersky is a renowned historian specialising in the history of aviation in the US Navy and the US Marine Corps. Mersky joined the US Navy in 1968 and served as an aerial intelligence officer, retiring with the rank of Commander (Cdr). For 16 years, he was editor-in-chief of *Approach*, the official aviation safety magazine of the Navy and the Marines. From 1982 onwards, he was also the literary reviewer for the historical journal *Naval Aviation News*, for which he reviewed over 700 books. In 1999, he received the prestigious Admiral Arthur W. Radford Award for excellence in his work on naval aviation history and literature. This is the fourth edition, published in 2009 by the Naval Institute Press. This book traces the entire history of the Marine Corps’ aviation branch, from its creation in 1912 through to modern conflicts. It covers the doctrinal, technical and human development of Marine aviation through the First and Second World Wars (notably at Guadalcanal), the Korean War, the Vietnam War, as well as operations in the Balkans and South-West Asia. Mersky highlights the unique philosophy of this branch of the armed forces: the complete integration of aviation as a means of providing direct support to the infantry on the ground. The book contains over 200 rare photographs illustrating the aircraft and their pilots, from the early open-cockpit biplanes to modern vertical take-off aircraft such as the Harrier. 432 pages. Published in English. (Grégory Pons Collection)
