Description
Book: ‘Protect & Avenge: The 49th Fighter Group in World War II’
The title of this book reflects the rallying cry and fundamental mission of this legendary unit: to protect the Allies and avenge the attack on Pearl Harbour.
Co-written by Steve W. Ferguson and William K. Pascalis (historian of the group’s veterans’ association, the 49ers), and published by the American publishing house Schiffer in 1995, this book is the result of six years of in-depth research. It meticulously traces the odyssey of the 49th Fighter Group, which was the very first American fighter group deployed after Pearl Harbor. This unit became the most successful in the USAAF in the Pacific theatre, racking up 678 confirmed aerial victories against the Japanese.
Featuring a wealth of previously unpublished imagery comprising nearly 600 photographs, this book documents the unit’s chronological history:
• Their early days and historic engagement during the defence of Darwin in Australia.
• Their makeshift bases and fierce battles in the jungles of New Guinea and the Philippines.
• Portraits and accounts of exceptional pilots, notably Paul Wurtsmith, Boyd “Buzz” Wagner, as well as the two greatest aces in the history of American aviation, Richard Bong (40 victories) and Thomas McGuire (38 victories)
360 pages. Published in English.
