Description
Book: ‘Beware the Thunderbolt! – The 56th Fighter Group in World War II’ Richly illustrated with previously unpublished photographs, this book, written by the historian David R. McLaren and featuring a foreword by the famous flying ace Hub Zemke (commander of the unit), chronologically recounts the combat missions of the 56th Fighter Group of the 8th Air Force in England. Nicknamed the “Wolfpack”, this fighter unit was the most famous in Europe and served as a veritable breeding ground for American fighter aces. Operating over Europe in their powerful P-47 Thunderbolt fighters, these pilots shot down more than 1,000 Luftwaffe aircraft. The group counted amongst its ranks some of the greatest American aces of the Second World War, such as Francis “Gabby” Gabreski, Robert S. Johnson, Bud Mahurin, Fred Christensen and Hub Zemke. 208 pages. Book in English. (Grégory Pons Collection)
