Description
Book: ‘The Ragged Irregulars of Bassingbourn: The 91st Bombardment Group in World War II’
This book, co-authored by Marion H. Havelaar and William N. Hess and published in 1995 by Schiffer Publications, is highly sought after by collectors. It traces the complete operational history of the legendary 91st Bomb Group of the US 8th Air Force, based at Bassingbourn in England. Nicknamed the ‘Ragged Irregulars’, this unit of B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers carried out some of the most perilous and famous missions over occupied Europe.
It was precisely within this group that the famous B-17 ‘Memphis Belle’ served – the very first American bomber to complete its 25 prescribed combat missions with its entire crew unharmed, enabling it to return to the United States. The book brings together flight logs, mission accounts and a vast collection of period photographs in both black and white and colour.
