Book: ‘Ridgewell’s Flying Fortresses: The 381st Bombardment Group (H) in World War II’ This historical reference work, written by historian Ron Mackay and published by Schiffer in March 2000, provides a chronological and thoroughly documented account of the complete history of the 381st Bombardment Group of the 8th Air Force, based in England. In June 1943, this unit was stationed in the English countryside at Ridgewell Airfield (in the county of Essex) with its B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers. Deployed to combat operations over occupied Europe, the unit flew 297 missions against the infrastructure of the Third Reich. The focus is on the immense sacrifice made by the crews: over 1,000 days of fierce fighting, the group lost 131 aircraft and recorded more than 1,200 aircrew missing in action.
