Description
Book: ‘Herky! The Memoirs of a Cherckertail Ace’
This book, published in 1997 by Schiffer and written personally by US Colonel Herschel H. “Herky” Green, is his war memoir. It recounts the heroic career of one of the most legendary fighter pilots of the US Army Air Forces (USAAF) during the Second World War. Herschel “Herky” Green fought in the skies over the Mediterranean and southern Europe during the major air campaigns against the Luftwaffe. He distinguished himself as part of the legendary 325th Fighter Group, nicknamed the “Checkertail Clansmen” because of the yellow and black chequered pattern painted on the vertical stabilisers of their aircraft (P-40 Warhawk, P-47 Thunderbolt and later P-51 Mustang). Before being withdrawn from the front by the general command, “Herky” Green had become the top ace of the 15th Air Force based in Italy, with an impressive tally of 18 confirmed aerial victories. This book contains rare, first-rate illustrations drawn directly from the author’s archives. As books devoted to the 15th Air Force are relatively scarce, this volume enables the reader to discover this other theatre of operations which played a part in Germany’s defeat.
