Description
Book: ‘The Skull & Crossbones Squadron’ A book by Lee Cook, published in 1998 by Schiffer Publications, which is the most comprehensive history of the legendary US Navy’s VF-17 squadron, the very first to be equipped with the F4U-1 Corsair. This unit adopted the famous pirate emblem featuring a skull and crossbones as its insignia, which was subsequently adopted over the years by the US Navy’s ‘Jolly Rogers’ squadrons VF-84 and VFA-103. A mission-by-mission historical account of its deployment in the South Pacific, where the squadron was land-based for 76 days in the Solomon Islands to operate alongside Marine squadrons. The squadron was credited with destroying 152 Japanese aircraft, both in the air and on the ground. More than 350 photographs accompany the squadron’s logbook; many of its pilots, starting with its famous commander Tom Blackburn, were multiple aces. 240 pages. Book in English.
