Description
Book: ‘Last Hope: The Blood Chit Story’ Co-authored by R. E. Baldwin and Thomas Wm. McGarry and published in 1997 by Schiffer Publishing, this book recounts the complete and official history of these precious escape documents printed on fabric (silk, paper, rayon) nicknamed ‘Blood Chits’, which Allied pilots carried with them on missions during the Second World War. These extremely ingenious documents, the size of a handkerchief, were intended for airmen shot down in enemy or occupied territory. These pieces of fabric contained messages written in several languages of the territories overflown, asking for help from the civilian population in exchange for a reward promised by the US government. This book is exceptionally rich in documentary material and is the definitive reference work on the subject. Fully illustrated, it brings together an impressive collection of colour photographs of ‘blood chits’, insignia and other documents relating to secret escape operations, drawing on more than 70 government documents formerly classified as ‘secret-defence’. 219 pages. Published in English. (Grégory Pons Collection)
