Description
A collection of photographs relating to Lieutenant Walter H. Sills, 93rd Bomb Group – 8th Air Force – England/Sweden (11 original photographs, press cuttings, certificate, MACR report)
Lt. Sills was a navigator aboard a B-24 Liberator heavy bomber with the 93rd Bomb Group (328th Bomb Squadron) when his aircraft was damaged during a mission over Kieller in Norway on 18 November 1943. Unable to return to England, the pilot decided to fly to Sweden (a neutral country), where the crew were interned, just as other crews who had flown to Switzerland had been.
This collection comprises around ten original photographs, two of which have been colourised: a portrait of Sills in dress uniform and a photograph of his squadron’s patch on the chest of a jacket. Among these photographs is one of Sills posing with one of his comrades in civilian clothes. Photographs of this kind were taken at British air bases to produce identity photographs, which were included in American airmen’s escape kits to help them produce false identity documents should they find themselves in occupied territory. The Navigator’s certificate in Sills’s name and the invitation to the Class 43-5 certificate-awarding ceremony on 10 April 1943, of which Sills was a member, complete this collection. Original documents relating to interned American airmen are particularly rare.
