Description
Collection of Military Police photographs in Paris, 1944–1945 (approx. 100 original prints)
An interesting collection of original prints comprising a series of photographs taken on 8 May 1945 around the Champs-Élysées, showing the jubilant crowds (some with captions on the reverse). These photographs were taken by a member of the US Military Police, the famous ‘MPs’. They reveal the American soldiers’ fascination with public urinals – something completely unknown in the United States – as well as virtually all of Paris’s major landmarks: the Eiffel Tower, Les Invalides, the Louvre, the Trocadéro, the Place de la Bastille, Gare d’Orsay, Notre-Dame, the Tuileries Gardens, La Madeleine, the banks of the Seine, Montmartre, the Opéra Garnier, the Arc de Triomphe, the Place de la Concorde, the statue of Joan of Arc, the bells of Notre-Dame ringing on 8 May 1945, the Vincennes Zoo… and the famous café terraces so much loved by the GIs. Two large-format press agency photographs (20x25cm/8x10 in.) show the crowds on the Champs-Élysées on 8 May 1945 and a mass being celebrated at La Madeleine in March 1945.
