Description
RESTRICTED Manual, USN-USAAF, ONI 41-42 Imperial Navy This manual, published by the US Navy’s Intelligence Division, is dated November 1942. It is a collection of technical data sheets devoted to the warships of the Imperial Japanese Navy. These sheets are accompanied by caricatures and bound together with a cord, the whole set housed in a rigid protective box. The descriptions are accompanied by 3D views which, in particular, illustrate the famous ‘flat-top’ design – a term referring to Japanese aircraft carriers characterised by their flight deck being situated as a superstructure above the ship itself. The aircraft carriers Kaga, Akagi and Soryu, sunk during the Battle of Midway, are clearly listed in the fact sheets; curiously, the Hiryu is not mentioned as such. All classes of ships are listed, from the largest vessels down to the smallest destroyers. This type of manual was commonly used by the crews of US Navy aircraft in pursuit of the Japanese fleet.
