RESTRICTED USN-USAAF ONI 229 Manual: Japanese Merchant Navy This manual is an excellent complement to the ONI-41-42 manual included in this sale. Published by the US Navy’s Intelligence Division, it provides an alphabetical code classification of all types of Japanese vessels to enable rapid identification prior to attack. This coding system was also used for the transmission of information by radio and the drafting of mission reports. One of the specialities of the US Navy’s land-based heavy bombers in the Pacific was, in fact, hunting down these vessels, a task in which the PB4Y-1 Liberator (the naval version of the B-24) and the PB4Y-2 Privateer wreaked havoc. This type of manual was therefore carried on board most American aircraft hunting Japanese ships throughout the Pacific. (Grégory Pons Collection)
