P-38 Lightning Identification Poster Original poster classified as RESTRICTED, measuring 50 x 35 cm (modern frame), published by the Army Air Forces Identification Unit in July 1942 (7/42). This date appears at the bottom of the poster. The aircraft’s specific identification details are shown in red. These posters were displayed in training schools and on the walls of bases in combat zones, particularly in briefing rooms, so that aircrew could familiarise themselves with the silhouettes of Allied or enemy aircraft whilst in flight.
