Confidential Report: 8th Air Force Fighter Command – 2 August 1944 on operations on 20 July 1944 Rare report from the USAAF intelligence services (A-2) Rare report from the USAAF intelligence services (A-2) circulated in the United States within the 1st Fighter Command. Seven pages of intelligence on the course of operations by the 8th Air Force for the day of 8 May 1944 during a mission. Four pages of intelligence on the course of operations by the 8th Air Force for the day of 20 July 1944. During a bombing raid on targets in Germany, the 8th Air Force’s fighter units were authorised to break away from the bomber formations to carry out strafing attacks on German airfields. On this occasion, the famous ace of the 56th Fighter Group, Francis ‘Gabby’ Gabreski, was shot down by anti-aircraft fire. Although he had completed his tour of duty and was due to return to the United States, he was tempted to undertake one final mission to improve his score and retain his position as the 8th Air Force’s top ace. The report states that his squadron mates saw him emerge unharmed from the wreckage of his aircraft.
