Confidential Report: 8th Air Force Fighter Operations, 16 May 1944, concerning operations on 8 May 1944 A rare report from the USAAF Intelligence Service (A-2) circulated in the United States within the 1st Fighter Command. Seven pages of intelligence on the course of operations by the 8th Air Force on 8 May 1944 during a heavy bomber raid on Berlin and Brunswick. This report details five aerial victories by Lt. Carl J. Luksic, a P-51 pilot with the 487th Fighter Squadron/352nd Fighter Group. Luksic was the very first pilot to achieve such a feat in the European theatre of operations, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. The report describes a formation of approximately 100 to 150 German fighters north-east of Bremen launching an attack on the wave of heavy bombers (Grégory Pons Collection)
