Confidential Report: 8th Air Force Fighter Operations, 18 August 1944, concerning operations on 4 August 1944 A rare report from the USAAF intelligence services (A-2) circulated in the United States within the 1st Fighter Command. Seven pages of intelligence on the course of operations by the 8th Air Force on 4 August 1944 during several raids on Bremen and Hamburg in Germany. The report notes the destruction of 53 German aircraft on that day and an increase in sightings of German jet fighters. One particularly interesting detail is that German Me-109 fighters were flying British roundels on the upper surfaces of their wings and black crosses on the undersides. (Grégory Pons Collection)
