Description
Confidential Report: 8th Air Force Fighter Operations, 26 July 1944, concerning operations on 7 July 1944 A rare report from the USAAF Intelligence Service (A-2) circulated in the United States within the 1st Fighter Command. Six pages of intelligence on the course of operations by the 8th Air Force on 7 July 1944 during a major raid on several industrial targets in Germany: Lutzkendorf, Halle, Bernburg, Aschersleben, Merseburg, Bohlen and Leipzig; the main targets being refineries or synthetic fuel plants. During the course of the day, units of the 8th Air Force faced fierce opposition from German fighters, who lost 116 aircraft. Among the notable events of the day was the performance of Captain Fred Christensen of the 56th Fighter Group, who scored six victories in less than two minutes, even though the targets were Ju-52 transport aircraft.
