Description
USAAF Distinguished Flying Cross Complete decoration, in its original box with a replacement ribbon and an enamelled pin for wearing in the lapel. This decoration was awarded for completing a tour of operations or for an act of heroism or extraordinary valour during combat missions. Awarded to Lieutenant James D. Naler (whose name appears in the top left-hand corner of the first page, and in greater detail on page 2), this decoration is accompanied by the collective citation for the DFC dated 27 October 1944, relating to events on 24 August 1944 during a mission over Czechoslovakia. Naler was a pilot of a B-24 Liberator heavy bomber with the 742nd Bomb Squadron of the 455th Bomb Group, part of the 15th Air Force, based in Italy. He flew 50 missions with the 455th BG from San Giovanni airbase, then served in Korea as a B-29 pilot. In 1948, he took part in the Berlin Airlift, during which he flew nearly 325 sorties. He continued his career in the US Air Force until the Vietnam War, flying the F-4 Phantom and the B-52 Stratofortress. He passed away on 26 May 2008. Attached is the archived PDF file containing the crew lists for the mission of 24 August 1944, on which Naler’s name appears.
