Description
A-2 flight jacket
A-2 leather flight jacket, size 36, manufactured by BRONCO, belonging to Captain H. Hetzel, who was posted to the 491st Bomb Squadron (341st Bomb Group) of the 10th Air Force. This unit, equipped with B-25 Mitchells, operated from India from September 1942, before being transferred to Chakulia. It carried out numerous missions over Burma and China, where it was eventually based with the 14th Air Force from January 1944 onwards.
The original version of the squadron insignia, featuring a horseshoe hooked round a mast (a symbol of accuracy from the famous horseshoe game) above a globe showing the continents differs from that adopted by the US Congress after the war, in which the globe changed colour to blue and the continents were replaced by meridians and parallels.
In the CBI (China, Burma, India) theatre of operations, many squadron patches were produced locally, notably in Karachi, India, by local craftsmen who painted them onto leather or canvas, or wove or embroidered them.
This jacket is a uniform colour with knitted cuffs at the bottom of the sleeves which have been replaced (presumably an old repair); it features the original, functional Crown-brand zip; ‘Captain’ ranks painted on the shoulders; a painted leather squadron patch, a painted CBI insignia on the shoulder, the original label, the original inner lining, and a leather name tag reading ‘CPT. H. HETZEL’.
Very good condition. (Provenance: former Michel Doursoux collection)
