Description
Blood Chit: USAAF ‘Frantic’ Missions, 1944 A safe-conduct pass printed in Russian on rayon paper, intended for crew members who took part in the ‘Frantic’ missions in the USSR, the purpose of which was to enable them to reach deep-rear targets in eastern Germany and the Balkans (a photograph of a P-51 Mustang pilot from the 8th Air Force on the cover of *Air Force* magazine shows him wearing this pass). During these missions, American aircraft would fly over their targets and continue eastwards to land at Soviet airfields in Ukraine. This ingenious accessory (modelled on those developed for the theatre of operations in China, Burma, India and the Pacific) was issued to pilots and crew members of the 8th and 15th Air Forces to enable them toidentify themselves to the civilian population and Soviet military forces during long-range missions in which they were required to land on Soviet territory before taking off again to carry out a further mission on their return journey. There were seven such missions between June and September 1944. This complete example includes its rare Rhodoid case with a cotton cord designed to be worn round the neck. Soviet soldiers were reputed to have a trigger-happy disposition. Tensions with the Soviets were such that these missions were halted after two months.
