Description
A set of personal memorabilia comprising a photo album, a scarf and a badge
This set appears to have belonged to Master Sergeant George J Parker (presumably attached to the 12th Bomb Group, as indicated by a document from the US Army Finance Bureau dated 3 August 1942 informing his wife of monthly financial payments made to him). The cover of the album is adorned with the insignia of the 12th Bomb Group and the insignia of the four squadrons attached to it (the 81st, 82nd, 83rd and 434th Bomb Squadrons). This unit, equipped with B-25 Mitchells, operated in Egypt as part of the newly formed 9th Air Force to support the British 8th Army and Allied troops across Egypt, Libya, Tunisia against the columns of the Afrika Korps and the ports along the Mediterranean coast between October 1942 and April 1943, then the famous Mareth Line, intended to cover the retreat of German troops, before operating in support of the landings in Sicily and Italy. The 12th Bomb Group was subsequently redeployed to the China–Burma–India theatre of operations from 1944 onwards.
The patch of the 83rd Bomb Squadron on a red background featuring the ‘Flying Death’ is included with this lot but without any guarantee of authenticity: local imitations, which were rife at the time, can sometimes be misleading as to their authenticity, as can post-war handmade replicas produced by veterans’ associations. The souvenir scarf, on the other hand, is typical of the kind of goods sold in Egyptian bazaars, which were very fashionable at the time.
The cover has been detached from the rest of the album, which contains 140 photographs, all glued onto the cardboard pages. These photographs include 17 images of B-25 Mitchell ‘nose art’, as well as shots taken on return from missions showing the impact marks from medium-calibre weapons and the damage sustained by the B-25s during their missions, as well as the living and accommodation conditions of the men on operations, particularly at the forward base LG 88 (a landing ground in the Egyptian desert where the 12th Bomb Group was stationed during the Battle of El Alamein). An excellent account of these little-known and poorly documented operations, given the rudimentary conditions in which the units were forced to operate.
