Description
B-3 flight jacket (size 38). Manufacturer: Rough Wear Clothing Co.
A winter flight jacket standardised in 1934, made from sheepskin with the fur facing outwards, coated with a layer of polyacrylate lacquer which gives it a glossy finish and protects it from rain, oil and petrol splashes, and mould. The B-3 jacket features a wide turn-down collar that can be turned up using two leather tabs, a single slanted patch pocket on the right front, and two leather drawstrings at the waist. It is also characterised by the wide horse-leather patches, of a more reddish hue, sewn onto the areas most exposed to abrasion. This example was produced by Rough Wear Clothing. The back consists of two pieces sewn together vertically, a feature characteristic of early models. The shoulder tabs used for sewing on officer’s rank insignia have been trimmed away to prevent them from interfering with parachute deployment. The original zip has been replaced with a British Second World War ‘Lightning’ model, which reinforces the idea that it was used by a pilot or crew member of a bomber based in England. The jacket is in excellent condition, still sturdy and free from defects. Size 38 US.
