Description
Modified Type A-4 beige canvas flight suit (size 40) A modified, personalised late-production Type A-4 flight suit, made from olive drab wool gabardine in size 40. The A-4 was standardised in March 1930 and produced until 1943, undergoing only a few minor modifications to the leg pockets. The overalls feature a belt with a buckle, four belt loops, a main zip and four additional zips for fastening at the cuffs and ankles. All zips are protected by a sewn-on flap secured with press studs. Two side slit pockets provide access to the trouser pockets underneath. Wartime versions had only two open pockets on the right-hand side, one diagonally across the chest and one below the knee. In 1943, these two pockets were fitted with zips, as airmen complained of losing their contents during aerial combat or parachute jumps. Furthermore, some pilots had extra pockets added to carry as much equipment as possible in the event of a parachute drop. This is the case with the model on display, which features an additional patch pocket with a press-stud flap on the left thigh. This particular jacket also features a leather name patch sewn onto the chest, making it unique. (Mathieu Bianchi Collection)
