Description
M-3 anti-flak helmet
Manufacturer: McCord Radiator Mfg. Co. No. xxxx Nov. 194x
The M-3 helmet, produced by McCord Radiator, was standardised in December 1943 and designed specifically for the USAAF. It is based on the M-1 helmet, with two cut-outs at the ears to accommodate headphones and the addition of two hinged steel protective ear flaps. This helmet has no liner. The canvas suspension system is attached directly at six points to a metal rim welded to the inside of the steel shell. It is removable to facilitate adjustment and has no leather headband. As with late-war production models of the M-1 helmet, the canvas chin strap is sewn onto movable straps (late model). The helmet is coated with an anti-static flocking – paint mixed with wool fibres – which gives it a fluffy appearance and prevents it from sticking to the fingers when handled in very cold weather. The item for sale is in excellent condition with its original coating and shows some localised signs of oxidation, mainly beneath the protective ear flaps.
