Description
Collection of photographs and US Navy aviation decorations This collection, whose owner is unidentified, comprises the decorations and photographs of a crew member of an SB2C Helldiver dive bomber, apparently a radio operator and gunner. The short ribbons on the decorations are typical of US Navy practice. The Air Medal features a star on its ribbon, indicating an additional award (in the USAAF, additional awards were identified by a small oak leaf, the Oak Leaf Cluster). Furthermore, the National Defence Medal bears the ‘FLEET’ bar, referring to a squadron of aircraft in the US Fleet. This set is accompanied by the unofficially manufactured CBI (China-Burma-India) shoulder badge, which can be seen in one of the photographs being worn by one of the airmen on his flight suit, confirming his assignment to a combat unit and operational missions.
