Photograph album: 40th Bomb Group (China-Burma-India), 20th Air Force This album contains around 180 photographs. Although it is anonymous, it documents the first B-29 Superfortress raids from India and China during 1944. The album begins with a few shots of the Chinese countryside and rural areas in India, before moving on to the B-29s of the 40th Bomb Group, bearing their distinctive identification markings on the top of the fin. The photographs are of very high quality and were likely taken with a civilian camera. Several photographs of monuments and street scenes taken in India are interspersed throughout the collection. A few photographs in military format (4x5in.) dated July 1945 show the smouldering wreckage of a B-29 following a forced landing, preparations for a raid in which a B-29 bearing the markings of the 444th Bomb Group awaits its bomb load. One of the distinctive features of this album is that it contains around thirty photographs of B-29 ‘nose art’, as well as three photographs of airdrops of supplies to Allied prisoner-of-war camps in Japan, a B-29 bearing the inscription ‘PW SUPPLIES’ under one wing. A fine collection on a subject about which little is known.
